June 27, 2026 - workday collage

Workday – June 27, 2026

Normally the workday would have been on the 4th of July holiday but we moved it up a week.

Who: Anyone who’s willing and able to help. Scarlett students are welcome to participate but you must bring a parent.

Where: Meet at the bench near the showcase at the main entrance to the woods.

Why? spreading wood chips, trash cleanup along old Ellsworth and removal of invasive buckthorn and honeysuckle. Maybe even building boardwalks.

What to bring:

  • Wood Chips: wheelbarrows and shovels,
  • Clean up: Plastic garbage bags and gloves,
  • Invasives: loppers, hand saws, plastic bags.
  • Trail marker post stakes: Stakes, saw, shovel, sledgehammer, drill, screws.
  • Stepping Stumps for Platt Road entrance: Truck/car/van.

When: Saturday June 27, 2026 at 10:00 am – noon.

Never done this before: Welcome! We’ll show you what to do and how to do it!

Please wear sturdy shoes, gloves and long pants. Spray your ankles, etc against ticks.

What to do about deer ticks.

What we did:

Four Friends, all of them from Colonial Square, managed to make it to the entrance to the wood, despite the road being torn up.  No surprise, they all live pretty close to the woods anyway and are familiar with the walking routes. The weather was perfect and it was a pleasure to be outdoors.

  • Peter and Phil repaired 2 trail markers.
  • Judy worked on removing garlic mustard.
  • Manfred worked on removing burdock.
