November 02, 2024 Work Day Collage

Workday – November 2, 2024

Weren’t we fortunate to have such good weather for a Workday? Just enough sun to light up the woods and keep us warm, no mosquitoes, and the rain held off.  All y’all were very photogenic and the collage almost put itself together this time.

The bark in the middle row of photos (far left) is that of a young Hackberry tree very close to the trail that I have never noticed before.  Pat Frey used an app on her phone to identify it.  I checked the official Scarlett Mitchell Plant Inventory and hackberry is on the list of the whole 90 acres.  That list was put together by Barb Walters, who lives on Charing Cross, worked for NAP for a while and spent much of her career at the U of M Herbarium.  She wasn’t the only one who worked on the project. In the near future, I will be sending Board members copies of all the species lists I have gotten from NAP over the years. Anyway, I hope you had as good a time out in the woods as Manfred and I did.

Who: Anyone who’s willing and able to help. Scarlett students are welcome to participate but you must bring a parent.

Where: Meet at the bench near the showcase at the main entrance to the woods.

What to bring: Hand tools if you have them – saws, loppers, clippers. Snacks and water if desired.

When: November 2, 2024 at noon – 2:00pm.

Why? We’ll continue to cut invasive buckthorn and honeysuckle along the north edge of the school property. Not sure what these shrubs look like without their leaves and berries? We’ll be happy to teach you to identify them by their bark and their bite.

  • Clean up trash on Ellsworth Road where it intersects with the school property
  • Cut down any honeysuckle that are fruiting and easy to identify this time year – anywhere in the central 40 acres
  • Remove and replace broken boards in walkways along the pond

Never done this before: Welcome! We’ll show you what to do and how to do it!
