Garlic Mustard pulled laying on a log

Garlic Mustard (Invasive)

From Judy S.

On the Work Day last Saturday, a few of us walked up the path from the main entrance toward Platt Road to check out the garlic mustard status.  Phil asked how you could differentiate garlic mustard from other plants.  I was a bit dismissive, having 20 years of pulling it under my belt.  After reading a couple of articles I realized that because we have mostly kept it under control in Scarlett Mitchell for two decades, we were really looking at first year growth.  Low growing clusters described as “basal rosettes” which is quite different from the second year, which shoots up with pointed leaves, accompanied by flowers and then lots of seeds.

The article in the link below from the Ontario Invasive Species Centre has some great photos of both phases.

I went out on Sunday and Monday late afternoon and found a lot of those basal rosettes in the area south of the co-op (showed in pink on the attached map).  I’ll be going out frequently to pull and check other areas where we have had infestations in the past, some of them in the central 40 acres.  If you’re interested in helping, I’m happy to have your help and your company.  Send me an email of text me at 734-904-1995.
