Maple tree, leaf, bark, seed

Maple

Maple (acer) is a hardwood tree.  Maple timber is commonly used in flooring and furniture-making.  Maple syrup is made from the sap of some maple species including sugar maples (acer saccharum).  Maple tree pests are fungus, caterpillars, aphids and Asian long-horned beetles.

The maple leaves are palmately (like a hand) lobed.  The leaves are in pairs opposite on the branch.

The seeds occur in a winged pair.  The seed’s wing is paper thin.  As the seeds fall, they twill down; resulting in them called helicopters or whirlybirds.  The helicopter action of the seeds allows them to land a distance from the tree.

Scarlett Mitchell Woods has the following varieties of maples (acer):

  • Box-elder (Acer negundo)
  • Black Maple (Acer nigrum)
  • Norway Maple (Acer platanoides)
  • Red Maple (Acer rubrum)
  • Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)
  • Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)
