The Friends of Scarlett Mitchell Woods has workdays on the first Saturday of the month. The concept of workways is far from a new thing. The following is from an Ann Arbor News article from the May 1st, 1970 newspaper.
Nature Walks, Cleanup Set
“Operation Mitchell – Scarlett Woods” will start a two-weekend spring campaign this Saturday with a guide-training tour and a cleanup drive, then continue the following weekend with nature walks.
Residents of Mitchell School-Scarlett School are, who are sponsoring the touts together with conservation groups from throughout the city, have engaged in a campaign to preserve the woods and marsh area, originally purchased by the school board as a possible high school site.
The training tour for guides will get under way Saturday at 8 a.m. under the direction of Mrs. Robert Hendrix, an assistant in the outdoor education program of the public schools. The cleanup drive, to which the public is invited, will start from the Scarlett Junior High School parking lot at 9 a.m.
The nature walks is scheduled for the following weekend on Saturday, May 9 1970, from 6 to 11 a.m., and on Sunday, May 10 1970 from 2 to 4 p.m.
