Oak wilt has come to Ann Arbor. It has been identified in trees in Bird Hills.
Oak wilt is caused by a fungus called Ceratocystis fagacearum. The fungal disease is transferred by the water conducting (vascular) system of the tree directly below the bark.
One way trees are infected is by tree trimming or storm damage. The sap from the wounds attract beetles in the Nitidulidae family that have the fungus from another infected tree. Another way trees are infected by root grafts, similar to Dutch Elms Disease.
