This showcase and kiosk was erected as an Eagle Scout project in 2019 by the persistent hard work of William Chettleburgh, then a high school student. William recruited a lot of helpers: Fellow scouts from Troop 7, mentors, and parents pitched in, along with interested volunteers including Manfred Schmidt and Michael Benham. The original idea was to encourage displays of
ways that teachers and students at Mitchell Elementary and Scarlett Middle School used the woods. Unfortunately, Covid 19 hit the school system shortly after the showcase and kiosk were erected. However, during the pandemic lockdown period many more people than usual found the woods for the first time. Out of necessity, I took on the role of keeping the displays up to date. It wasn’t hard to find material, but often time was in short supply, so the displays were not changed as quickly as hoped. Still, it was gratifying to see people stop and read the material. The showcase also became one more way to contact folks in the neighborhood.
